Both
the covers and the inside pages of a book can now
be manufactured using "print-on-demand"
technology. This technology consists of four components:
electronic files; imposition software; high-speed
laser printers; and traditional binding equipment.
Three of the four components (the first two and the
fourth) are the same as that used in offset printing.
It is the use of high-speed laser printers vs offset
printing presses that makes the POD process different.
Whereas high-speed laser printers can make printing
as few as 25 copies quite economical, an offset press
run of 300 to 400 copies is necessary to achieve the
same per unit cost. (More)
The
Benefits
If
only small quantities are needed at a time POD can
save the publisher what is otherwise a considerable
investment in the printing and storage of books. POD
also makes possible a host of other benefits that
are unique to the nature of producing so few copies
at a time. (More)
